Lothianburn pairing Gib it some welly

LOTHIANBURN duo Ruth Brown and Viv Curran staged a strong finish to lift the Gibson Cup, the Capital's popular annual ladies' foursomes tournament hosted by Edinburgh Leisure, at Braid Hills.

After leading the qualifiers from the medal round, Harburn's Aileen Kennedy and Fiona Smith looked set to justify their No.?1 ranking as they had the edge for much of the closely-contested final. But Brown and Curran went in front for the first time in the match when it mattered most, the latter holing a tricky five-foot putt for a title-winning par at the 18th.

In the semi-finals, the Lothianburn pair beat another Harburn combination, Dorothy Wilson and Linda Boyle, while Kennedy and Smith were 3 and 2 winners against Broomieknowe's Sandra Hennessey and Linda Wemyss.

And Broomieknowe's Kate McIntosh and Wendy Nicholson won the second-flight matchplay event, beating Anne Brownie and Mary Stark 2 and 1 in the final.

The honours in the Consolation Salver went to Kay Baillie (Musselburgh) and Sal Shepherd (Craigmillar Park) with 39 points, one more than Baberton duo Laura Reekie and Adrienne Turner.
