Live blog: Australia 6 - 9 Scotland (FT)

SCOTLAND win the first game of their summer tour with the last kick of the game against Australia - read Iain Morrison’s live updates on the game from Hunter Stadium

12.19: “Harris kicks dead. Scots get last use of the ball. Laidlaw break. Two scrums...a PENALTY at the second one. Hooter has gone. This is the game. Laidlaw lines it up from 23 out. OVER! Scotland win 9-6. Flipping heck. Amazing game. Well done the Scots.“

12.10pm: “Wallabies win a pen. Harris lines it up from 48 out with the wind behind. Horrrible kick. 6-6. 75 mins.”

12.08pm: “Ben Alexander on for Dan Palmer...a test for Grant. Barnes tries a DG but slices it badly. Scotland aren’t rushing to restart the game.”

12.04pm: “Two pens see the Scots clear but only to the halfway line. Another throw goes wayward...not easy in the wind but its hurting them. Cross-field kick to Ioane finds Tom Brown too far infield. Scots win another pen for holding on. 68 mins. 6-6.”

11.58am: “Rob Simmons barges over the Scots line just after coming on. TMO says “inconclusive” and Wallabies stay on the attack. Long period of assaults on Scots line but the boys in blue have some spirit tonight to hold them out. Eventually win a pen for obstruction. Score remains 6- 6.”

11.46am: “Scots win penalty because Aussies are deemed truck and trailer. Scots are penalised or sealing off. Long pen for Harris but has a shot from halfway. With the wind should be no problem with distance. Hits the posts below the cross bar. Scots try to run it out. Scotland will need to score some points this half but they cough up another penalty for holding on against Blair. Barnes goes for touch. Attacking lineout.

Worrying times for Scotland.”

11.41am: “Wallaby lineout on Scots 22 after Genia kick. Scots subs warming up.

Scots t/o ball in front of their own posts...20 out. Blair kicks the ball about 2 yards forward and into touch....why bother?”

11.36am: “Digby Ioane breaks the line but the Scots win a turnover after holding the ball up...choke tackle on Sharpe (I think). Ioane look sharp even if Sharpe doesn’t!”

11.34am: “Harris evens things up less than three minutes into the second half after Rennie is pinged at the breakdown. 6-6 and Laidlaw puts the ball straight into touch at the restart. Not the start they wanted.”

11.19am: “Half time. Scots lead 6-3 at the break but it doesn’t look nearly enough given the gale force wind that has picked up and will be in the Scots faces for the second 40.”

11.18am: “David Pocock wins a turnover against his rival Ross Rennie and Aussies are on the attack again inside the last five minutes. Scots win t/o and Mike Blair clears but Luke Morahan drops...ref says backwards. It’s a battle in the middle of the field now with both sides using the big men. Anthony Fainga’a slices Ford at the ankles. Blair runs the ball downfield and the Scots have a lineout but the throw isn’t straight. Sean Lamont off, Tom Brown on for his first cap on 38 mins.”

11.10am: “Stuart Hogg knocks on just outside his 22 line to give the Aussies an attacking scrum. Aussies on the attack... 10 metres out and looking dangerous. Pen advantage to Aussies for offside. Surely they’ll take the three. Posts are waving in the gale. Crowd boo the choice to go for goal which is madness. Mark Harris goes back almost to the 22 line (brave man) and makes the kick into the gale. 6-3 to Scotland on 32 mins.”

11.00am: “Still no score. Laidlaw gets another chance from dead ahead after Harris kicks up into the air and Aussies are offside. Laidlaw kicks it! 3-0 Scotland!”

10.54am: “Laidlaw lines up a pen after the Aussies collapse a driving maul but the little man doesn’t allow for the gale which pulls it four metres wide of the left upright. Agony!”

10.51am: “Scots forwards pick and drive to within five metres of the Aussie line.

They need points this half because they won’t get any into the gale.

Attacking scrum five out. No-one can hold onto the ball. Joe Ansbro, John Barclay and Genia all guilty. Scots l/o twenty out.”

10.45am: “Scots drive a lineout... but not too far and win a pen at the breakdown.

Greig Laidlaw sticks it inside the 22 and Ross Rennie comes close before putting out a back flip that went to no one at all. Scots KO and Aussies have the put in at the scrum for Berrick Barnes to clear in to what is now a gale force wind.”

10.40am: “Will Genia kicks and the ball gets blown back to where it came from. Yup, there is a wind alright. Aussies get a pen but it’s too far from goal. They pop it into touch at the twenty-two and Scots win a t/o at the breakdown to lift the siege.”

10.30am: “Anthems over and I was wrong about the wind. Scotland will have a good blow at their backs in the first half. There were storm warnings!”

10.15am:Iain reports the following from Hunter Stadium in Newcastle, New South Wales as the teams prepare to kick off:

“As the forecasters predicted the rainis teeming down here in Newcastle which will make playing much rugby very difficult.

“If one more

Aussie says ‘remind you of home!’ my head might explode.

“But they have a point.

“Aussies have won the toss and elected to receive. No wind to speak of.”
