Lionel Messi nets a hatrick

Lionel Messi scored a hat-trick as Barcelona won a record ninth Spanish Super Cup by beating Sevilla 4-0 in the second leg last night for a 5-3 aggregate win.

After losing the first leg 3-1 in Seville, the champions dominated from the start in the Nou Camp to win Spanish football's traditional curtain raiser between the league winners and cup holders.

In the 14th minute, Pedro Rodriguez delivered a low cross that rebounded in off defender Abdoulay Konko.

In the 25th, Messi ran on to Xavi Hernandez's long through pass and put a first-time shot past goalkeeper Andres Palop. The Argentina striker scored his second and put his side ahead on aggregate in the 44th, shooting high into the net after being put through by Daniel Alves. Messi ran on to Andres Iniesta's pass to complete his hat-trick in the 90th.

Barcelona fielded an under-strength side in the first leg, leaving out the eight players who helped Spain to World Cup success in South Africa in the summer. However, last night coach Pep Guardiola fielded a more familiar-looking side. With doubts over the future of Zlatan Ibrahimovic, and new signing David Villa starting on the bench, Bojan Krkic accompanied Messi and Pedro in attack.

Copa del Rey winners Sevilla, who went into the game following a 1-0 defeat to Braga in the final Champions League qualifying round first, struggled in midfield and barely threatened.

Internazionale striker Samuel Eto'o scored twice to help get Rafael Benitez's era at Inter off to a winnning start with a 3-1 triumph over AS Roma in the Italian Super Cup at the San Siro. Eto'o struck in the 71st and 80th minutes after Goran Pandev had cancelled out John Arne Riise's opener for Roma.

The goals ensured Inter bagged their fourth title of the year after they won an unprecedented treble of Champions League, Serie A and Italian Cup treble under Jose Mourinho last season. The Super Cup is usually played between the Serie A and cup winners but with Inter claiming a clean sweep, Roma took part in this season's curtain-raiser because they were runners-up in both domestic competitions.
