Liechtenstein stun Lithuania with 2-0 win in Vaduz

Liechtenstein won a competitive international for the first time in nearly four years when they shocked Lithuania 2-0 in their Euro 2012 qualifier in Vaduz last night, and now just sit one point behind Scotland in Group I.

Philippe Erne rifled home the opening goal in the sixth minute, letting fly with a long-range shot, and Michele Polverino slotted home the second before half-time as they picked up their first points in Group I. Liechtenstein's last competitive win was 3-0 against Iceland in a Euro qualifier in 2007.

The tiny principality with a population of only about 35,000 people remain bottom of the group with three points from five games, but Lithuania, who have four points, virtually waved goodbye to their chances of a place at the finals in Poland and Ukraine.

Germany – who had 150 supporters detained by police before their match against Austria in Vienna – scored a last-minute winner to beat their neighbours 2-1 in Group A. The home team had levelled through an own goal from Arne Friedrich, after Mario Gomez's first-half opener, but Gomez pounced late to give Germany all three points and preserve their 100 per cent record. In the other Group A games. Everything went to the form book in Group C as Italy beat Estonia 3-0 and Slovenia won 2-0 against the Faroe Islands.

Italy remain top of the group after goals from Giuseppe Rossi, Antonio Cassano and Giampaolo Pazzini gave them a comfortable win over Estonia.

An Eric Abidal own goal handed Belarus an unlikely 1-1 draw at home to a below-par France in Group D. Abidal turned Timofey Kalachev's cross into his own goal after 20 minutes, but after Florent Malouda levelled matters only two minutes.

In Group E a solitary Mikael Forssell strike gave Mixu Paatelainen's Finland a 1-0 win over San Marino.

Sweden moved to within six points of Netherlands at the top of the group with a 4-1 victory in Moldova, Johan Elmander (2), Ola Toivonen and Alexander Gerndt scoring for the Swedes.
