Lesley Atkins cruises to victory in Mackie Bowl

Lesley Atkins, the 15-year-old who recently won the Scottish Under-18 girls' match-play golf championship, chalked up her biggest victory in open tournament play at Gullane, East Lothian, yesterday.

The Loretto School pupil, who hails from Hawick, won the Mackie Bowl 36-hole SLGA Order of Merit event over her home course with very good rounds of 71 and 79 - the par is 74 - for an eight-under total of 140.

Atkins had four shots to spare at the finish from the Majorca-based Scot, Lauren Mackin. Lauren had rounds of 74 and 70.

lThe Scotland squad, captained by Pamela Williamson (Baberton), for the European senior women's golf team championship at Sporting Club Berlin from September 1 to 4 is: Heather Anderson (Alyth), Lorna Bennett (Ladybank), Fiona de Vries (St Rule), Anne Ryan (Tain), Mary Smith (Tain), Moira Thomson (Gullane Ladies).. Reserves: Noreen Fenton (Dunbar), Fiona Hunter (Baberton).
