Leith look to sink Gala's title dream

Leith ATHLETIC, leaders of the Central Taxis First Division, travel to the Borders to meet second-placed Gala Fairydean in a match which could go a long way in helping to decide this season's promoted clubs.

Leith, although they have played one more game than Gala, lead the Netherdale team by 13 points and an away victory would almost certainly confirm their promotion credentials.

It is a fact not lost on Leith manager Willie McFarlane who said: "This is a big, big game because if Gala were to beat us it would give them a wee glimmer of hope. It is definitely more of a 'must win' game for them and they did have a good result last weekend when they beat Berwick Rangers Reserves. However, we also had a good win beating Kelso United 4-0. We scored an early goal and although Kelso sat back and tried to keep the game tight there was only ever going to be one winner.

"In our earlier meeting with Gala we beat them 5-0 at home - everything went right for us. Gala had some players suspended and we took our chances but I expect a much tighter game tomorrow. We know that it will be hard and the boys are all looking forward to it."

Martin McAuley is McFarlane's only doubt apart from long-term injury victim Kevin Freedman.

Gala Fairydean, arguably one of Scotland's top non-league clubs - who have languished in the First Division since 2005 - are enjoying their best season in the lower division under the guidance of manager Fraser Lothian who said: "Tomorrow is definitely a six pointer as Leith are runaway leaders at the moment. They thumped us 5-0 earlier in the season although we did have a depleted squad.

"Our players are hurting a bit from that result and are looking for revenge and we have not been beaten at home in the league this season. Everybody is up for the challenge knowing that a win keeps us in contention. There is a long way to go and we will be going for it, giving 110 per cent and we are quietly confident."

Gala have a full squad including highly-rated youngsters Alan Smith and Craig McBride.
