Leith are spot-on for their second trophy

Leith ATHLETIC 97 lifted their second trophy in eight days, following up their victory in the Charles Porter Memorial Trophy with a win on penalties over Edinburgh South Reds to claim the South East Region under-14 Star Trophy.

Leith opened the scoring early in the second half at Saughton Enclosure, but South levelled 20 minutes later to force spot-kicks. Athletic goalkeeper Campbell Johnston was the penalty king, scoring one and saving from Reds to help his side to a 5-4 shootout win.

The teams managed to produce some moments of slick play amid the driving winds that tore across the vast pitch.

Leith's heroes from the previous week included strike pair Lewis Park and Patrick Ryan, and the two combined well in the opening half without really testing South goalkeeper Harry Cairns. Instead, it was Reds who forced the first few openings, Ryan Martin beating Leith No.?1 Campbell Johnston to a low cross but toeing his first-time shot wide of the target.

Reds' rangey striker Elias Mukora cut an influential figure in the first half in his role as South's No.?9. He reserved his best moment for shortly before the break, chasing down a ball on the right before running the ball towards the byline. He then showed great vision to cut the ball back for Denim Collins, who floated his 15-yard high ball towards goal but succeeded only in looping the ball into the arms of Johnston.

South contrived to find themselves behind shortly after the interval - and from a particularly unlikely source. Leith right-back Andrew Baird certainly made his presence felt five minutes after the restart. His diminutive frame packed no little power to strike a high shot over the goalkeeper from the edge of the box and into the net, the No.?2 celebrating in style by leading his team mates across to the pavilion-side touchline with delight etched across the face of every one of them.

Despite the blip, South went on to create the most promising openings in the final half-hour, and it was almost with an inevitability that they eventually managed to find the equaliser.

Connor Burke stung the palms of Athletic custodian Johnston, who pushed the fierce 15-yard strike wide.

Reds were lucky to avoid conceding felt they should have been awarded a penalty moments later as their midfielder Darren Clegg tried to impede Leith's Leighton Paterson en route to goal.

South's persistence was rewarded on 61 minutes following a corner into the Leith box. Those defending had forced the ball out of their area, but it was chipped back in, where Zain Asif latched onto it and, from six yards out, slotted past Johnston from close range. And that was the last goal that would be scored as the game went through extra time.

In the shoot-out, Leith's Leighton Paterson, who looked to be limping, squandered his side's opening effort, then saw the equally impressive Park suffer the same outcome.

Murray Dickson, Keith Turner (in emphatic style), goalkeeper Johnston, Lewis Robertson and Neall Lloyd all saw their 12-yard strikes fly in for Athletic. South's Liam Ewens, captain Clegg, Bradley Kaye and Connor Burke all scored with their penalties, but it wasn't enough for the Inch Park side.
