Lee on form with 392-1 Perth treble

Graham Lee stole the show on the third and final day of the Perth Festival by riding a fantastic 392-1 treble.

Two wins for Scottish handler Jim Goldie sandwiched a victory for Nicky Richards and Lee had to show different aspects of his riding talents to guide each to success.

The first triumph was all about timing, as he produced top-weight Pokfulham (10-1) with a withering late run in the Intermediate Handicap Hurdle. Still well back turning for home, the Goldie runner ate up the ground on the run to the last. A fine leap took him to the front and he flew up the run-in to secure a 15-length verdict over Coeur De Fou. "He's run a brilliant race. We held up a bit this time and Graham gets a great tune out of him," said Goldie. "I'm chuffed to bits, I just wish he hadn't won as far as he did! We'll see what the handicapper does, but we'll keep him on the go for a while.

"He fractured his cannon-bone a year ago and it's screwed together now, so it's a bit of a fairytale that he's still doing it. He's a superstar."

The second leg of Lee's hat-trick came in the Intermediate Handicap Chase, showing finesse in the saddle to coax the Richards-trained Peachey Moment to the front after the last. Market leader Cottage Acre held the lead on the run for home, but Lee was holding Peachey Moment (9-2) together alongside, keen to wait as long as possible before pushing the button. Once he did allow his mount to run on, he pulled clear for a six-length win.

There was a thrilling finish to the Crabbie's Alcoholic Ginger Beer Handicap Chase, with Lee and 11-2 chance Regent's Secret eventually wearing down favourite Quito Du Tresor for a narrow win. "It was brilliant to see him win as he's one of the favourite horses in the yard and that's his fifth win at Perth," Goldie added. "We've had him since he was a three-year-old, he's given us some great days and today was another one."

The runners in the Highland National Handicap Chase had the best part of four miles to travel, but it was won by the narrowest of margins. Petite Margot (13-2) was hard ridden from the turn for home but kept finding for Sam Twiston-Davies and just managed to hold off Bally Wall by a nose.

Gordon Elliott secured his sixth and seventh winners of the Festival to cap a fantastic week. Definite All Star (7-2) claimed the maiden hurdle, while 6-5 favourite Trendelenburg won the Conditional Jockeys' Handicap Hurdle.
