Law stays in charge in South Africa

David Law kept himself in pole position during the second round of the South African Amateur Strokeplay championship at Mount Edgecombe.

The former Scottish champion, who surged to the top with an opening 64, added a five-under 67 for a 13-under 131 and a one-shot lead over Frenchman Alexandre Levy. Law, who had a hole-in-one during his first round, continued his dazzling form yesterday as he charged to the turn in four-under.

The Aberdeen teenager picked up further birdies at the 10th and 17th and, despite a bogey on the last, the Paul Lawrie protg held on to his place at the top.

Law, 19, said: "You want to go out there and try to get yourself as far away from the field as possible, so it's a great place to be. It's certainly something to build on for the last two rounds."

Scott Gibson cemented his place in the top-10 with a 68 for a 137 while Kirkhill youngster Paul Shields blasted a 65 for a 138 and a share of 14th with Kris Nicol and Scottish champion Michael Stewart, who both hit 68s. l Jack Doherty shares third place heading into the closing round of the Hi5 Pro Tour's El Valle Open in Spain. The Kilmarnock pro fired a two-under 69 for a six-under 136 and is six behind Spaniard Miguel Angel Martin.
