Law joins paid ranks

DAVID Law, who won the Northern Open as an amateur last month, has turned professional after joining his mentor, Paul Lawrie, on the books of a Swiss-based management company.

The 20-year-old has signed a “long-term contract” with 4Sports & Entertainment and will make his debut as a professional in this week’s European Tour Qualifying School first stage event at Frilford Heath.

Law, a two-time Scottish Amateur champion in the past three years, will then turn his thoughts to an appearance in the Hero Indian Open at Delhi Golf Club in a fortnight’s time.“I am pleased to be signing with 4Sports as I’ve got to know them well over several years as they manage Paul Lawrie and I’ve been lucky to be part of his Foundation,” said the Aberdonian.

Law won the Northern Amateur Open in South Africa earlier in the year before becoming the first player in nearly 30 years to become a multiple Scottish Amateur champion. He later became the first amateur to claim the Northern Open title, at Meldrum House, since 1970.

“After the successful year I’ve had I feel ready to make the transition and join the professional ranks,” added Law.

Joining him in the this week’s field at Frilford Heath are Walker Cup reserve Ross Kellett, who has entered as an amateur along with Greg Paterson, as well as professionals Mark Hillson, Keir McNicoll and Ian Redford.
