The Glasgow-based runner, 23, stuck to world silver medallist Faith Kipyegon and was just beaten into second place in 4:19.12, leaving Muir second only to Zola Budd in the all-time British rankings after surpassing Yvonne Murray’s Caledonian best, set on the same track, in 1984.

“It was a great run in wet conditions that were more like a Scottish autumn day than warm record-chasing conditions,” said Muir’s coach Andy Young. “And it’s a great start to an important year. Kipyegon has a few 1500m under her belt already so for Laura to go head to head with her bodes well.”

Muir, who won the 1500m in Oslo 12 months ago, will return to her main distance at next week’s Diamond League leg in Stockholm as a final tune-up for the Olympic trials later this month in Birmingham

Fellow Scot Jake Wightman was third in a largely domestic 1500 metres but fell short of the Olympic qualifying time. The former European junior champion was edged out in a push for the line by Australia’s Luke Mathews and Norwegian Snorre Loken to finish in 3:38.83, four spots ahead of British rival Tom Lancashire.

Kenya’s Asbel Kiprop coasted to a fifth victory in the men’s Dream Mile with the 2008 Olympic champion clocking the quickest time in the world in 2016 of 3:51.48, with British prospect Charlie Grice sixth. World champion Dafne Schippers blew the field away to win 200m in Oslo in a world lead of 21.93sec.
