King shoots Musselburgh into Fife & Lothians semis

SUPER LEAGUE team Musselburgh Athletic scraped their way into the semi-finals of the Fife & Lothians Cup thanks to a brace of goals from substitute and top goalscorer Mattu King in their 2-1 victory over Spartans at Ainslie Park.

Musselburgh made the breakthrough just before half-time when

Adam Nelson played a ball out wide to Danny Kelly, who controlled it before firing in a good shot which the keeper blocked. However, it fell to sub King, only on the field five minutes, and his effort flashed into the net from 12 yards.

Spartans responded with a Kenny Young free-kick which was headed just wide off the far post by Ollie Antoni.

Musselburgh came out for the second half trying harder but still the play was very scrappy. They had the bulk of the pressure but Spartans remained dangerous with Young falling inches short of reaching a good low ball from Antoni into the heart of the Musselburgh defence.

Musselburgh were now missing chances they would normally convert and King hit the inside of the far post when clean through. And they paid for their profligacy when Spartans equalised in the 72nd minute.

The Musselburgh defence failed to clear a bouncing ball allowing Young to shoot. His strike was blocked only as far as Gary Bannon and he slotted the ball behind the keeper.

Then with a penalty shoot-out looming, Musselburgh were awarded a spot-kick of their own with two minutes remaining after Nelson was brought down in the box. King stepped up and made an immaculate job of converting it.

Meanwhile, in the South Division, Livingston moved off the bottom again with a 1-0 win against Harthill.
