Kenny Miller pleads for bodies to bolster vanquished Rangers

KENNY MILLER has backed manager Walter Smith's calls for reinforcements in January after Rangers crashed out of the Champions League.

The Scottish champions' 1-0 defeat to Manchester United at Ibrox last night - courtesy of a Wayne Rooney penalty three minutes from time - ended any hope of progressing to the last 16 of the competition.

They will instead parachute into the Europa League after beating Turkish champions Bursaspor - thrashed 6-1 in Valencia last night - to third place in Group C, with Smith admitting Rangers could struggle in that competition if injuries continue to mount.

Sasa Papac and Kyle Lafferty both failed to make the clash with United, while other first-team regulars, such as Maurice Edu and Madjid Bougherra, were already ruled out.

Miller would love an extended run in the Europa League but believes new players would also boost Rangers' number one aim - retaining the Clydesdale Bank Premier League title.

"We've seen again how thin we are on the ground," the striker admitted. "We struggled to get subs on the bench again and Kyle Hutton has had to come in. James Beattie was called into the squad at the last minute to make up the numbers. We are down to the bones so when January comes, if we can get a few reinforcements, that would be good."

Miller again failed to end his Champions League drought, which now stretches to 15 games without a goal, after spurning a couple of excellent opportunities against United - the first a headed chance, the second a shot which was turned away. "To lose a game to a penalty in the 87th minute was disappointing, considering we have applied ourselves very well again within the system and only allowed Manchester United very few chances," he said.

Meanwhile, Spurs boss Harry Redknapp has set his side the target of finishing top in Group A after his side secured their passage to the knockout stages by destroying Werder Bremen 3-0 last night thanks to goals from Younes Kaboul, Luka Modric and Peter Crouch.

The win keeps Spurs level on points with Inter at the top of the table, ahead of the club's final group game against FC Twente in two weeks' time.

"We have enjoyed it so far. Hopefully now we can get a result at Twente," said Redknapp."That would be good because finishing top of the group is a big advantage, looking at the other groups.
