Kelso called off after failing to beat freeze

Kelso's replacement fixture scheduled for today has been abandoned due to frost.

Clerk of the course Anthea Morshead had called an inspection for noon yesterday but decided not to postpone the inevitable as it became clear conditions were not going to improve.

"Unfortunately we had no option but to cancel," she said. "It is minus 2C as we speak and it was minus 6C overnight which was colder than the worst forecast we had been given. It is due to be minus 3C overnight and up to 1C tomorrow so it's disappointing but we've no choice.

"The fresh ground is OK but anywhere off the racing line is frozen solid. As this was an extra meeting it is doubly frustrating.

"We've lost four meetings now this season and it looks like only today and tomorrow will be the days we are unraceable." The meeting at Ludlow fell to frost yesterday and Leopardstown's Irish Champion Hurdle fixture on Sunday is also under threat.

Bitter overnight temperatures hit the track on Wednesday night leaving it frozen in places. However, with temperatures forecast to rise tomorrow and Sunday, officials are "optimistic" the meeting will take place. Silver Turn was limited to just one start as a juvenile but she is making up for lost time now and can strike gold in the Enhanced SP's At bluesq.com Handicap at Wolverhampton today.

The Shamardal filly finished a fair fourth in a moderate maiden event at Catterick after missing the break last year, giving trainer Bryan Smart a little bit of encouragement for this year.

She then repeated that trick when tried on the all-weather for the first time earlier this month, getting a bit left behind before swiftly making up the ground.

Silver Turn then travelled well throughout and eventually came home two lengths clear without her jockey really having to hit top gear.

That win sees her switch to handicap company and an initial mark of 77 looks highly workable and given that she is so unexposed, Silver Turn could be anything.
