Karaka runs a cracker to win Hamilton prize

KARAKA JACK last night landed the feature race on Scotland’s first evening meeting of the Flat season at Hamilton Park to supply Paddy Aspell with the middle leg of a sparkling treble, writes Gordon Brown.

Trained by David Nicholls, he saw off long-time absentee Spes Nostra by a neck in the Thomson.co.uk Handicap. Aspell said: “Tonight’s race didn’t exactly go to plan but he kept finding for me and he’s quite a useful horse.”

Script, owned and trained by Alan Berry, won the first race of her career at the 25th attempt when pipping hot-favourite A J Cook by a head in the 6f maiden to initiate Aspell’s famous night. The former jump jockey said: “She travelled well and her experience helped.”

Berry and Aspell also teamed up with Jordaura, an easy three and a quarter length winner in the Thomson Claiming Stakes.

Ted’s Brother won his first race over a mile when taking the Alex Fergusson Memorial Handicap under Robbie Fitzpatrick.

Little is given away by the Coolmore camp but the hints were there that Magician could well be the superior of their two Chester Derby trial winners this week.Although he landed the BetVictor.com Dee Stakes by four lengths yesterday, compared with the six managed by Ruler Of The World in Thursday’s MBNA Chester Vase, Magician was achieving more on pure form as he defeated a higher-rated runner-up in Contributer.

Both are by Galileo but 13-8 favourite Magician, a winner of one of his four juvenile starts, is out of Listed-class sprinter Absolutelyfabulous, and Ryan Moore used his inherited speed to storm away in the final furlong. Trainer Aidan O’Brien was securing a fourth running of the Group Three and two in a row following subsequent Derby third Astrology last year.

The team’s challenge against hot favourite Dawn Approach will not be finalised until Battle Of Marengo has appeared in tomorrow’s Derrinstown in Ireland, and probably Mars and/or Indian Chief in the Dante. Kevin Buckley, Coolmore’s UK representative, asked about the Chester winners, said: “I suppose, to be fair, we were equally impressed with both horses. Ryan did have quite a smile on his face today. He said he got a good feel from him and was really impressed when he pushed the button. ”

Irish raider Jamesie could be the horse to follow in this after-noon’s Betfred Victoria Cup at Ascot. He warmed up for this ultra-competitive heat with a fine second at Dundalk last month, going down by a head after another luckless run. Waiting tactics seem to suit David Marnane’s charge.
