Judo: Olympic test medals for GB pair

Britain secured two more medals on the final day of the Olympic test event at ExCeL.

Edinburgh’s Sally Conway made it to the gold medal fight in the women’s under-70kg, but lost out in sudden death to Maria Portela of Brazil, while fellow Scot Matthew Purssey won bronze in the men’s under-90kg.

On Saturday, Athens Olympian Sophie Cox – who has recently returned to the sport after a five-year break – delivered another podium finish with a bronze in the under-57kg.

Conway, 24, believes the experience will make her stronger on the road towards her goal of qualification for the London Olympics next year.

“I’m happy with how I fought but I’m disappointed and gutted that I didn’t get the gold medal – for me and the crowd. The crowd and support has been amazing.”

Conway added: “I’ve got three or four world cups next year and I’m hoping to medal at those so I can compete in the Olympics. That’s my goal.”

With many of the elite fighters away in the Far East, this competition was always more about tournament logistics rather than individual performances.
