Judo: Burton aims for mat finish

Tranent's Euan Burton is eyeing gold or silver as the European Judo Championships get underway in Istanbul today.

The 32-year-old took bronze medals in the 81kg class at both the World and European Championships last year, and he is determined to improve on that sequence in Turkey.

"Judo is not one of those sports where the same person wins tournament after tournament. There's no guarantee of winning a medal at a major championship, and someone from outside the top ranking positions can come and surprise people," he explained.

Sarah Clark, runner-up two years ago, will be joined in the GB squad by city club-mates Sarah Adlington, James Millar, Matt Purssey, James Austin and Chris Sherrington.
