Johnston adds to Tranent's strong line-up

BRIAN JOHNSTON has underlined high-flying Tranent's ambition by signing another Super League player for the runaway South Division leaders.

Mark Stevenson, who used to play for Arniston Rangers, has joined the East Lothian club from Camelon and goes straight into the squad for tomorrow's away match at Blackburn United.

Johnston, who lured both Martin Cameron and Paul Parkin to Forresters Park from top-flight clubs earlier in the season, said: "We're going well, winning our last eight games, but we can't sit back and rest on our laurels. We've got eight league games to go and they will all be like Cup finals, starting against Blackburn."

Tranent go into the game with a 13-point cushion over their opponents but Blackburn have five games in hand.

"It's a real six-pointer but I would rather be in our position going into a game like this," added Johnston, who suffered a 2-1 defeat at the hands of the West Lothian side in his first game back in charge in early November but gained a modicum of revenge when Tranent won a Fife & Lothians Cup clash between the sides last month.

"We know what to expect against them," he said. "They're a young side with a good workrate but we seem to have developed a winning habit and that is pleasing. To win eight games in a row is a good achievement at any level, never mind the South Division."

Keith Salton looks like missing out tomorrow after going off against Spartans last weekend with a calf strain, with Brian White a ready-made deputy.

"I've got a squad of 16-17 players and they all feel they should be playing on a Saturday," said Johnston. "You could say some of them had fallen out of love with football but have got their appetite back.

"Gary Small, for instance, has been exceptional for us in the middle of the park and, for the club as a whole, I'm hoping it's a case of onwards and upwards."

Broxburn, who are above Blackburn on goal difference, entertain Dunbar in one of tomorrow's other South Division games.
