Jim Goldie hails Lee ride after double at Ayr

Jim Goldie was full of praise for jockey Graham Lee after his performance on the tricky Rasaman completed a quick double for him at Ayr.

The Renfrewshire trainer enjoyed his first success when Joe Fanning helped Hawdyerwheesht (5-1) stroll six lengths clear in the William Hill In The App Store Handicap. There was clearly plenty of satisfaction for Goldie half an hour later when Rasaman struck for the first time in over a year when fired between horses by Lee in the final furlong of the William Hill Bet On The Move Handicap.

“Graham is top class and has ridden him a lot,” said Goldie.

“To start with he didn’t use to like him as he’s so unpredictable in the stalls, but he’s now getting a great tune out of him.

“He sat and waited, the gap came and through he popped. The horse has plenty of ability and we’ll keep him at six or seven. He likes a bit of pace to run at. We were a bit concerned he was travelling too well but he stuck on.”

Hawdyerwheesht was also on a fairly long losing run, and Goldie told Racing UK: “In fairness Carol (Bartley), who rode him last time and rides him at home, said to take the visor off and settle him in. There was a nice pace so we dropped him in, he came home well and he’s deserved it.”

The opening Irish Stallion Farms E.B.F./William Hill Maiden Stakes was a messy affair won by Kevin Ryan’s 11-8 favourite Straits Of Malacca, who beat Captain Midnight a head. The stewards looked into interference between the pair in the final furlong, deciding it was accidental but they were unable to apportion blame.
