Jessica Ennis ready to tackle GB record

JESSICA Ennis warmed up for a possible assault on Denise Lewis' British heptathlon record next weekend with an impressive showing at the Loughborough International meeting yesterday afternoon.

The world champion won the high jump with a clearance of 1.93 metres, the highest she has gone since 2007 and just two centimetres off her personal best. She earlier won the 100m hurdles, perhaps her strongest discipline, in a wind-assisted 12.85 seconds and finished the day by throwing 43.83m in the javelin. The 24-year-old takes part in the multi-event meeting in Gotzis, Austria, next weekend and, judging by her current form, Lewis' ten-year old record could be under threat.

Ennis' current best score for the heptathlon is 6,731 points, which she set in winning World Championship gold in Berlin last summer, while Lewis' mark is 6,831.

Elsewhere, William Sharman, who finished fourth at last year's World Championships, won the 110m hurdles in 13.60sec. Leon Baptiste won the 200m in 20.53sec and Martyn Rooney the 400m in 46.10sec.
