Jessica Ennis-Hill’s backs Glasgow 2014 ticket drive

Olympic gold medallist Jessica Ennis-Hill yesterday urged sports fans to make sure they apply for tickets to next year’s Commonwealth Games as the deadline approaches.

The heptathlete, one of Glasgow 2014’s most high-profile ambassadors, is out of action at the moment with an injury but plans to take part in the Games next summer.

Around one million tickets were available when the application process opened on 19 August, and organisers have been “delighted” with the response from the public.

Applications close on Monday at 6pm and seats for the swimming, diving and cycling events are said to be among the most popular.

A ticket draw is likely to take place for the most popular sports because of high demand, while unsold tickets will be offered again later this year.

Ennis-Hill said: “Having a major championships in Britain so soon after the Olympics is brilliant and to have the support of a crowd made up of all the home nations will help us athletes achieve our best again.

“Don’t put it off or wait until the final bell.”

Organisers say the best opportunities for successful applications are for rugby sevens, hockey and badminton, while artistic gymnastics, shooting and the triathlon events are “extremely popular”.

On the day ticket applications opened there were long delays on the Glasgow 2014 website as thousands logged on. A queuing system will be used online on Monday to manage website traffic to avoid a similar situation.
