Janowicz beats Cilic in battle of the giants

JERZY Janowicz produced another shock result at the BNP Paribas Masters in Paris to dump out 13th seed Marin Cilic. The 6ft 8in Polish qualifier won his battle of the giants against the Croatian, just two inches shorter, to set up a third-round clash with either world No 3 Andy Murray or French wild card Paul-Henri Mathieu.

The first set unsurprisingly went to a tie-break, which Janowicz won. Emboldened by that, he forced five break points against his opponent’s imposing serve in the second set, taking two to seal a 7-6 (8/6) 6-2 win.

Home favourite and sixth seed Jo-Wilfried Tsonga narrowly avoided becoming another big-name casualty, squandering a one-set lead against compatriot Julien Benneteau before finally coming through in a final-set tie-break to win 6-2 4-6 7-6 (7/2).

There were no worries for the other seeds in second-round action, with Japan’s Kei Nishikori winning 7-6 (7/2) 6-2 against wild card Benoit Paire and Stanislas Wawrinka, the Swiss player seeded one place below Nishikori at 16, a 6-3 6-2 winner against Carlos Berlocq.

Britain’s Jonny Marray and his Australian partner Paul Hanley reached the second round of the men’s doubles, beating German pair Philipp Kohlschreiber and Florian Mayer 7-5 6-1.
