Jamie Murray and Bruno Soares crash out of French Open

The pair won the title in their maiden slam together in Australia but were unable to make it past 16th seeds Marcin Matkowski and Leander Paes in Paris.

Having won their eight previous slam matches, the British-Brazilian pair lost two tie-breaks, going down 7-6 (7/5), 7-6 (7/4).

The defeat means Murray must wait for another chance to reclaim the world No 1 ranking he briefly held this spring, while his run of consecutive grand slam final appearances ends at three.

Murray, pictured, did have the consolation of victory in the mixed doubles with Chan Hao-ching, putting the top seeds into the quarter-finals.

The Scot said of the men’s doubles loss: “We’re disappointed to lose. It was a bit unfortunate the way we played both the tie-breaks, because we had enough chances in both sets to go ahead.

“They probably played a bit better than normal and we were probably a bit below par. They deserved it, certainly for the way they played the tie-breaks better than us. We should have done enough to win. It was a frustrating loss.”

In the men’s singles, Spain’s Albert Ramos-Vinolas added eighth seed Milos Raonic to his list of scalps, winning impressively in straight sets 6-2, 6-4, 6-4 to reach the quarter-finals.

Ramos-Vinolas next faces defending champion Stan Wawrinka, who has played himself into good form and defeated Viktor Troicki 7-6 (7/5), 6-7 (7/9), 6-3, 6-2.

In the women’s competition, 108th-ranked Shelby Rogers was impressive throughout in a 6-3, 6-4 victory over in-form 25th seed Irina-Camelia Begu.

Rogers will play fourth seed Garbine Muguruza in the last eight. The Spaniard reached the quarter-finals for the third straight year with a 6-3, 6-4 victory over 2009 champion Svetlana Kuznetsova.

The two remaining women’s fourth-round matches in the bottom half of the draw will have to be completed today – weather permitting – after rain brought an early end to play. Agnieszka Radwanska was closing in on victory over Tsvetana Pironkova at 6-2, 3-0 while, in the battle of the former finalists, Simona Halep leads Sam Stosur 5-3.
