Jamie Hamilton maintains winning ways at Kelso

The Hawick-born rider, on the mark at Aintree on 100-1 shot Tartan Snow, had to be at the strongest as his mount pipped long-time leader Barachois Silver by a short-head. Temple Green was only a neck away back in third.

Hamilton, who is based with leading Flat trainer Richard Fahey, said: “Things are going great at the moment and this was a close-run thing. I had a great run round and he was just idling a bit in the closing stages.”

Moscow Menace is trained by Galashiels handler Katie Scott, who said: “I broke him in and I’ve had him since he was a two-year-old. It’s terrific to win this race and we will probably come back to Kelso for another hunter chase later in the month.”

Tartan Snow looked in great shape after his exploits at Aintree as he led the 12 runners down to the 3m 2f start. Night In Milan also booked himself a return trip to the Borders course after an all-the-way success in the Virtuo Wealth Management Ltd Novices’ Chase under James Reveley. The jockey’s father – winning trainer Keith Reveley – said: “He loves it here and he’ll be back later in the spring for the race he won last May.”

Jack The Gent felt the benefit of quicker ground as he ended a two-year barren spell in the Princess Royal Trust For Carers Handicap Chase at Kelso yesterday. One win from 20 starts would hardly have inspired confidence in George Moore’s charge, but Jack The Gent was not unfancied at odds of 9-2 and was quickly into the lead, taking it up from the second fence.

Jockey Barry Keniry barely had a worry after assuming control at the head of affairs and although Jack The Gent made a mistake five fences from home, he was soon back on track and eased away to win by 10 lengths from Surprise Vendor.

Moore said: “He’s a lovely, big horse and you wouldn’t believe he wants good ground, that’s what we’ve been waiting for most of the winter. I think he will get two and a half, but when he’s right on good ground he loves to bowl. I did tell Barry he could take his time today if he wanted, but obviously he didn’t listen!”

Endeavor (6-1) claimed the honours in the Green Tree Hotel Peebles Conditional Jockeys’ Handicap Hurdle for Dianne Sayer and Tony Kelly, while the first division of the Duncan Sinclair Memorial Novices’ Hurdle went the way of the Alan Swinbank-trained Phoenix Returns (11-4) , who triumphed in the hands of Joe Colliver.

The John Wade-trained Pudsey House was a surprise 16-1 winner of the BG Quick Handicap Hurdle after leading from pillar to post under Adrian Lane. Overyou (13-8 favourite) claimed the closing Lyntoon Private Hire Mares’ Handicap Chase for Chris Grant and Denis O’Regan.
