Under the Czech’s tutelage, Murray finally got over the hump with regards to winning a tennis major tournament, taking both the 2012 US Open and Wimbledon title the following year.

However, Murray has since failed to build on that momentum, thanks in large part to a back problem which required surgery, and a mutual termination occurred in March this year.

Lendl has stressed that Murray required more time from his coach in order to get back up to speed. Something he couldn’t provide because of family commitments.

He said: “Just doing 20 weeks a year was hard. Andy, after his back surgery and winning Wimbledon [in 2013], needed more time not less.

“A lot of little things combined. When you win a big tournament like Wimbledon, it’s not easy sometimes.”

Murray spent three months without a coach before hiring former Women’s world No.1 Amelie Mauresmo in June this year.

It’s a move that’s been questioned in some quarters, though Lendl feels it needs more time to develop before he can comment.

He added: “Andy’s a great player, he is fully capable of winning more majors. As for how the coaching situation works out, we don’t know yet.”
