Inverleith drought goes on as Kelburne win Scottish Cup

INVERLEITH'S quest to capture their first trophy in 35 years foundered cruelly on an early own goal from defender Derek Salmond as Glynhill Kelburne cruised to a comfortable 5-0 victory in the Arthur McKay Scottish Cup final at Peffermill.

In only seven minutes a cross from Kenny Bain was touched in the circle by Michael Christie, but in an attempt to clear Salmond contrived to send the ball past his keeper Barnaby Barbour instead. Kelburne went two up when a cross from Josh Cairns was touched round the goalkeeper by Ross Stott. There were no further goals in the first-half but Kelburne's Chris Nelson and Salmond spent some time in the sin bin.

After the interval the Edinburgh side had a chance to get back into the contest but Richard Docherty's penalty corner effort sailed harmlessly over the bar. Kelburne stepped it up and two goals in as many minutes from Alan Forsyth and Mark Ralph from the spot finished Inverleith off. Ralph added a fifth from a penalty corner in the closing minutes.

In the women's cup, Grove retained the trophy with a 2-1 win over Milne Craig Western. Midway through the first-half the Western defence failed to clear, Aimee Clark passed the ball on to Louise Baxter for the opener. Just after the interval a short free hit was cut back by Ali Bell for Linda Clement to put the Taysiders two up.

Western's downfall was partly caused by wasting their penalty corner opportunities, but on their fifth set piece the ball was switched to Susan McGilveray whose shot flew high past Anna Schwartz off a defender's stick. It proved too little too late as the Dundonians held.

There was some comfort for the East district when Cala Edinburgh's second string captured the women's plate with a 5-0 whipping of St Andrews University, the goals came from Caroline Cuthbertson, Jol McGarvie, Linsay Eaglesham, Lee Prendreigh and Linian McNab. Highland InveRoss won the men's plate with a 5-4 victory over Giffnock in a ding-dong affair.

Dundee Wanderers confirmed their third place status in the women's Subway National League with a 2-1 victory over Kelburne. Vikki Bunce in the opening minute and Amy Rowan were the Dees' scorers.
