Inverleith come out on top in Ulster

Adam McKenzie was the toast of Inverleith yesterday, his penalty corner strike being sufficient to beat Cookstown in the final match and win the four-club tournament in Ulster. Inverleith finished the tournament undefeated with three wins and a draw.

Earlier in the day the Edinburgh side had drawn 4-4 with Fingal.

Inverleith’s success started on Saturday with a 2-1 victory over English side Cannock and their good form continued with another 2-1 victory over Irish side Annadale.

CALA Edinburgh lost their own pre-season tournament at Meggetland on goal difference to Glasgow’s AMN Hillhead, despite having already beat the Glasgow side 3-1 in the opening match. CALA also beat VWS Dundee Wanderers 2-1 before slumping to a five goal defeat to Grove Menzieshill.

Hillhead picked up from their initial reversal, beating Menzieshill 2-0 and Wanderers 1-0, to win the trophy by three goals.

However, CALA did win the women’s tournament, defeating Grove Menzieshill 1-0 in the final.

Scotland’s under 21 side had a torrid time on Saturday at the Blau-Weiss tournament in Germany, losing 4-0 to Munchner, 6-0 to Berlin and 4-3 to Lichterfelde.

Scotland’s girls went down 3-2 to Wales in the Sainsbury’s UK School Games, finishing bottom of the table. Despite dominating the play, the Scots found themselves two down at the interval to a side that only entered the scoring circle three times.

Within 15 minutes of the restart, the Scots were back on level terms but Wales made it 3-2 with ten minutes left and went on to win the game.

Scotlands boys lost 8-2 to Wales in their final match and also finished bottom of their competition.
