Inveraray lifted by shock cup win over Kyles

Inveraray stalwart Davie Macpherson believes Saturday’s dispatching of Kyles in the Camanachd Cup can give his side the lift to re-boot their season.

The 4-1 home win for John Smylie’s men in the quarter- finals ended Kyles’ unbeaten run which stretches back to March.

It also upset the odds, with Inveraray struggling near the foot of the Premier League and facing weekly selection problems.

However, the Winterton outfit have been one of the best cup teams of the last decade and Saturday proved that, in a one-off, they are still to be feared.

“We haven’t hit it off this season but, on Saturday, everything fell into place,” said Macpherson. “The manager got the tactics exactly right, using rolling subs to keep things fresh because he is aware Kyles’ centre line have dominated games. It worked and hopefully we can progress.”

Euan McMurdo (2), Grant Griffin and Garry Macpherson were Inveraray’s goal heroes.

They will now face either Kingussie, Newtonmore or Kilmallie in the semi finals.

Kingussie saw off Bute in Rothesay 3-0, while Newtonmore sunk Kinlochshiel 6-3, and Kilmallie beat Lovat 6-2.
