Idowu rapped for announcing Euro call-off via Twitter

UK Athletics head coach Charles van Commenee has criticised world triple jump champion Phillips Idowu for announcing his withdrawal from this weekend's European Team Championships on Twitter.

The 32-year-old tweeted on June 8: "Last session before my next diamond is done :) off to NY now. Hopefully it'll be another good. No Euro team champs 4 me this year."

UK Athletics confirmed Idowu's absence five days later, with Kolo Adedoyin named in the squad as his replacement for the Stockholm meeting. Van Commenee believes the decision was reasonable but was unimpressed with how the Londoner made the announcement. He said: "These things are done personally there are certain channels you have to follow. I expect somebody with such a profile to follow these procedures. We want the world champion to be in the team but he decided it didn't fit in after a lot of travelling. I can understand that but I'm unhappy about the timing of the decision after selection and the way he chose to communicate through Twitter."

Van Commenee has no plans to ban Twitter among British athletes but reckons they should heed advice on how to use it. "You can't forbid athletes to use Twitter. This is an issue we have to deal with in modern times," he said. "It's not like we will forbid anything - it's trying to influence and help athletes to use the medium in a smarter way."

Barcelona gold medallist Dai Greene captains the British side and will be eyeing gold in the men's 400m hurdles. Andy Turner goes in the 110m hurdles, Dwain Chambers and Anyika Onuora in the men's and women's 100m and Chris Tomlinson in the men's long jump.
