School sports: Roffe and Ritchie shine at Braehead

SKIING: Sean Roffe (Perth High School) and Nicole Ritchie (Craigholme School) won the secondary school skiing titles at the inaugural Scottish Schools Indoor Skier and Boarder Cross Championships at Snow Factor, Braehead.

The exciting new event also included primary schools and Owen Vinter (Mearns Primary) and Mhairi Crooks
(St Andrew’s Primary, Glasgow) claimed the honours.

In addition, there were classes for boarders, with Jacob Robertson (Trinity High School) and Jackson Peek (Battlefield Primary) taking the boys’ titles. The girls’ boarders only attracted two entries. Grantown Grammar’s Rebecca Shepherd and Niamh O’Neill-Berest (St John’s Primary) won the events – and showing an excellent standard.

“This was the first school Cross Championship event,” explained organiser Iain Ramsay-Chapman. “It is very humps and bumps and really mixed terrain and a great fun event.”

Meanwhile, in the new year, the first-ever Schools’ Alpine Series will be held, with the five rounds being staged at all the Scottish outdoor centres, Glenshee, Glencoe, Cairngorm, the Lecht and Nevis Range.

The first round will be held at Glenshee on 16 January.
