Huizing leaves field trailing in his wake

ST ANDREWS LINKS TROPHY: Flying Dutchman Daan Huizing, an 11-shot winner in the Lytham Trophy in May and runner-up in this to Tom Lewis 12 months ago, opened up a four-shot lead after carding a first-round six-under-par 65 on the New Course.

The 21-year-old eagled the eighth and also bagged four birdies as he produced another links masterclass to leave a quality field trailing in his wake in the 72-hole event.

“This year is the best I’ve ever played,” said Huizing. “I have learned to control the ball in the wind by relaxing and developing better distance control.”

South African Brandon Stone and Englishman Paul Kinnear are lying joint second, with Glenbervie’s Graeme Robertson leading the Scottish challenge after a 70 earned him a share of fourth spot.
