Hoy targets track title

Olympic champions Sir Chris Hoy and Victoria Pendleton head the list of names confirmed to take part in the National Track Championships in Manchester next month.

The pair will be at the National Cycling Centre between 28 September and 2 October, and will be joined by the likes of Jason Kenny, Ross Edgar, Matt Crampton and world junior champion John Paul.

Pendleton, looking to add to her haul of ten national titles, will go up against Becky James and Jess Varnish in the women’s sprint.

Meanwhile, Peter Sagan claimed the sixth stage of the Vuelta a Espana yesterday to cap a dominant finish by his Liquigas-Cannondale team.

Slovakian Sagan completed the 196.8-kilometres ride from Ubeda to Cordoba in four hours, 38 minutes and 22 seconds, just ahead of Movistar’s Pablo Lastras.

The Liquigas team boasted four of the top five finishers.

Sylvain Chavanel of France remains in the overall lead while Britain’s Bradley Wiggins has moved up one place in the general classification to 20th.
