Horse Racing: Lee looks good on the level

Lee had a good record on the East Lothian track over jumps and has been doing just as well in his new sphere – especially with the help of Glasgow trainer Jim Goldie and they team up tomorrow with Glenlujie. The gelding was last of 12 runners on his last visit to this track  in May and has since raced  exclusively at Ayr, bouncing back to his best form when ridden by Lee to score in good style there last month.

The seven-year-old can follow up in the first division of the Towergate Underwriting Handicap (2.10) despite a 4lb rise in the ratings. Two of the gelding’s five career wins have been gained on this track and he will be well suited by the faster underfoot conditions which are likely to prevail.

Lee and Goldie can go on to complete a double with Nay Secret in the Kier Construction Handicap (5.00) over two miles – trip which will suit the  gelding. The four-year-old showed promise over shorter distances and ran well over hurdles before finishing second at Ayr in the spring. He was then a close fourth at Newcastle before opening his winning  account at Thirsk in June and has since made the frame twice on the level at Ayr and over  hurdles at Perth.

His dam and grand-dam were both winners in stayers flat races and over hurdles and he is clearly following the family trait.

Chookie Hamilton has 15  career wins to his credit, split almost equally between turf and all-weather and five of those successes have come on the East Lothian track. The last came over a mile and a half here just over twelve months ago and he lines up in the Nairn’s Oatcakes Handicap (4.25) off an 8lb lower mark.

The eight-year-old has  already run 14 times this year, but he takes his racing well and was successful on Polytrack at Lingfield in March. He was favourite when third at Wolverhampton recently and can recoup the losses here.

Richard Fahey does well on the seaside circuit and can get punters off to a flying start by saddling Done Dreaming to win the Scottish Racing Selling Stakes (1.40) which opens the eight race card. The youngster cost ¤16,000 and showed promise although unplaced on his debut before winning in game style at Ayr at the end of July and that form looks sound.

He disappointed somewhat next time at Thirsk when sent off a hot favourite and only fifth, beaten just over four lengths by Charlemagne Diva whom he meets again tomorrow. But a tardy start did not help and he now meets that rival on 7lb  better terms, so can turn the tables.

The official handicapper expects so as he rates Done Dreaming some 8lb better than his main rival tomorrow,  especially as Charlemagne Diva has been well beaten since that Thirsk success.
