Horner left at home as Hibs fly out

JOHN HUGHES today flew out to Holland without rising star Lewis Horner — but the Hibs manager believes the youngster can have a huge future at Easter Road.

The Under-19s player has been a surprise inclusion in the squads to face both Dunfermline and Queen of the South in friendly matches but was left at home while the rest of his team-mates flew out to The Netherlands for a training camp which will see them play four matches in nine days.

Hughes says the midfielder has the potential as long as he continues to apply himself in the correct manner. "Lewis Horner has been involved in the sides against both Dunfermline and Queens but won't be included in the squad for the trip to Holland. He's done well for us, he has got himself fit and he is looking stronger. I have been encouraged by what I have seen of him over the last few days."

Hibs kick off their four-match programme against Heracles tomorrow night, before taking on NEC Nigmegen, Ado Den Haag and Vitesse Arnhem, all Eredivisie outfits and Hughes says his players will benefit hugely from facing such a high standard of opposition.

"We are exactly where we want to be and perhaps even a wee bit in front of ourselves. We've had two good games, we've scored goals, passed the ball well and everyone has been getting a bit of the action. It's set us up nicely for Holland, four tough games, a whole different proposition but one which, hopefully, will stand us in good stead for Europe."

Striker Anthony Stokes was Hughes only injury worry, the Irish star having picked up a knock against the Pars but he was expected to take part in today's training session prior to departing for the Netherlands.
