Hoof It hares to glory win

Hoof IT had little trouble carrying top weight to a brilliant victory in the Blue Square Stewards' Cup on the final day of Glorious Goodwood.

Mick Easterby's speedster was carrying a 6lb penalty following success at York just a week ago and was forced to concede weight to each of his rivals.

But, having been covered up in the middle of the pack early, Kieren Fallon produced his mount to lead in the last of the six furlongs and he was never in danger of being caught.

The 13-2 joint-favourite was kept up to his work as the line approached and had a full two and a half lengths in hand over Tax Free at the line.

The other joint favourite, Mac's Power, was third. Nasri raced over on the stands' side and passed the post a creditable fourth.

Afterwards Fallon said: "He's done nothing but improve. Mick walked the course this morning and he told me to go to the far side so it made my job easier.

"I think he will be (a Group One horse]."

Hoof It is jointly owned by golfer Lee Westwood and his manager Andrew "Chubby" Chandler, but only the latter was on course.

He said: "Lee is flying to America tomorrow and he's got a job to do, so he's concentrating on that.

"He has already phoned me though and he's very excited.

"I've no idea what the cost is (to supplement for the Nunthorpe Stakes at York], I thought Mick had entered him.

"We will see what's what and we would like to have a go at all sorts (of races] - Hong Kong, Paris.

"We travel a lot and that's what we're all about."

The Toyo Tires Summer Stakes was an incident-packed contest, with Captain John Nixon unfortunately suffering a serious injury and bringing down rivals Activate and Verdant.

Icon Dream was on the front for a long time and put up a bold bid for victory but he was mowed down late on by the Robert Mills-trained 12-1 shot Petara Bay, ridden by Jim Crowley. Icon Dream was just a neck away at the finish, with Investissement and Sirvino not too far behind.

Activate's rider Jamie Spencer was soon back on his feet but Ryan Moore, who rode Verdant, laid on the turf for some time before being loaded into an ambulance.

Moore was later reported to have suffered a suspected shoulder injury and he will miss the ride on Crystal Capella in the Markel Insurance Nassau Stakes.

Jimmy Fortune will now partner the Sir Michael Stoute-trained runner.
