Hockey: Sutherland's big chance to impress

SCOTT SUTHERLAND is eyeing a place in Scotland's 2014 Commonwealth Games hockey squad and the CALA Edinburgh midfield star has an ideal platform to show he can perform against the best tomorrow.

Edinburgh-born Sutherland, son of Scottish hockey legend Chris Sutherland, goes in against double-chasing Kelburne. The Scottish Cup semi-final at Peffermill (12.15pm) is undoubtedly a David v Goliath clash but Edinburgh coach Neil Allan said: "All the selectors and the top brass of Scottish Hockey will be there tomorrow so this could be the best place for Scott to show what he can do."

The midfielder tops the club's scoring charts this season with 25 goals. And he has been a major influence as CALA have led the promotion chase in Division Two this term, albeit the club are now a point behind Stepps with five league games left after a one-point penalty deduction from Scottish Hockey.

Allan, who has also guided Edinburgh to a promotion play-off place for the one remaining Division One slot indoors next season, said: "This season we have started to see a lot more from Scott and his discipline has improved. He's not had a card for 12 or 13 matches which is good and he is maturing as a player. Scott has graduated to a senior role in the team and he is obviously going to be involved with the Scotland senior squad. He also hopes to make the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow and Sunday is a big game for him. The whole of Scottish Hockey will be there and that includes the selectors so it's a great opportunity for him."

Sutherland may be the top scorer for the club so far but CALA have other sharpshooters. David Guy has 21, Carlos Escriba 20 and Steven Glass 19.

Allan said: "We have a lot of goal-scoring potential in the team and we've beaten Grange and Dundee Wanders in the Cup plus Inverleith and Wanderers in friendly games. We have shown we can compete with Division One teams but we realise it would be a huge surprise if we beat Kelburne."
