Hockey: Shock troops CALA into Cup semis

CALA Edinburgh coach Neil Allan today praised his Scottish Cup hockey shock troops and said: "Bring on the big boys."

Allan has guided the Division Two front-runners into the semi-final of the premier knockout tournament, beating Division One pace-setters Grange and Wanderers in penalty shoot-outs.

Allan now looks forward to the draw for the final four and he said: "Nobody expected us to get this far but we don't fear anyone."

At Meggetland on Saturday, the sides were locked at 1-1 after the end of regular time.

Former Wanderers hit-man Steven Glass converted after a minute and Wanderers replied through a penalty corner scored by Allan Law 16 minutes later. They could not be separated and a penalty showdown ensued.

Ramsay Bell, Scott Sutherland, Glass and David Guy scored and Colin Johnston, Edinburgh's goalkeeper, saved two penalties as the home side won 4-2.

Meanwhile, pace-setting Grange lost their first Division One game of the season yesterday to throw the title race up in the air.

The Edinburgh club, who have led the league for most of the season, slipped up in their tenth game when they were edged 2-1 at Peffermill by reigning champions Kelburne.
