Hockey: Scots end on a high with 9-0 thrashing

Scotland may have failed to gain a qualifying place for the next round but finished on a positive note by crushing Portugal 9-0 in their final game at the second round of the World League in Paris.

The Scots still punched above their weight by finishing in fourth spot, one place above their seeding.

Scores from Ian Moodie and Alan Forsyth were followed by an own goal and, just on the interval, a penalty corner rebound strike by Niall Stott for a 4-0 lead. Gordon McIntyre, Willie Marshall, Gavin Byers, Chris Grassick and finally Wei Adams completed the rout in the second half. “We played well and won at a canter, but it was good to finish the tournament on such a high note,” said Eugene Connolly, Scotland’s manager.

On Saturday, Scotland slipped back to fifth place in the table after going down 2-1 to France.
