Hockey: Scots buoyed by wins over fancied Belgium

Scotland completed an unexpected double over an understrength Belgium at Waterloo, winning 3-2 then 6-0, a real feather in the cap for coach Derek Forsyth as he prepares his squad for the second round of the World League in Paris early next month.

Although missing several key players, the Belgians are currently ninth in world rankings, 14 places above the Scots, and are favourites to win the Paris tournament.

Meanwhile, Edinburgh University’s Louise Fleming was the heroine of Peffermill, her two goals in normal time and then her winning strike in the following penalty shoot-out dumped holders Grove Menzieshill out of the semi-final of the Arthur McKay Scottish Cup.

In the other semi-final CALA Edinburgh went down 1-0 to Milne Craig Western. After a goalless first half, the Glasgow side stepped it up after the interval and the breakthrough finally came in 50 minutes when Holly Cram touched the ball past the goalkeeper after Alie Howie’s hopeful pass.
