Hockey: Kelburne take over at top despite Grange win

Despite beating Edinburgh University 3-0, Grange have lost their perch at the top of the Subway National League as Glynhill Kelburne completed victories over Aberdeen Asset Management on Saturday and the Edinburgh students yesterday to lead the table by two points with a game in hand.

Cammie Fraser put Grange ahead against the students, but they had to wait until five minutes from the end of the game before securing victory when Gary Cameron and Colin McIver put a healthier gloss on the scoreline.

Glynhill Kelburne were ruthless in their 10-1 demolition of their Aberdeen opponents. Jonny Christie opened the scoring, and although Ray Sherrard produced a shock equaliser further strikes from Michael Christie, Ross McIntyre and Willie Marshall from the spot gave Kelburne a comfortable 4-1 half- time lead. The avalanche continued unabated after the interval with strikes from Marshall, Gordon McIntyre, Michael Christie, Don Tervit (2) and teenager Lee Morton.

Kelburne were almost equally as convincing against the students, the Christie brothers scoring twice each while the other goals came from New Zealander Steve Crossett, Morton and Marshall for a 7-1 victory. For the univeristy, Neil McNiven scored a consolation goal.

It was a mixed weekend for Inverleith, who tamed Western Wildcats 2-1 on Saturday then lost by the same score to Greaves Clydesdale yesterday. The Edinburgh side took an early lead against the Wildcats through John Harris. Adam MacKenzie made it two with a penalty corner strike, but while a red card for Peter Martin reduced the Wildcats to ten men, they did their best to rally when Euan Miller pulled one back.

After a goalless first half against Clydesdale at Titwood, the home side took the lead through Ciaran Crawford. MacKenzie replied for Inverleith at a set piece, but the winner came from Johnny Roy.

Menzieshill had a good weekend with back-to-back wins against Clydesdale (3-1) and Western (4-2), pushing the Taysiders up to fifth place.

In the second division CALA Edinburgh stuttered to a 2-2 draw with Harris yesterday, having demolished Greenock 12-0 on Saturday.

The top-of-the table clash in the women's league saw leaders Grove Menzieshill hammer Milne Craig Western 8-1 at Bellahouston, with Ailsa Wyllie scoring twice.

A hat-trick from Rhona Simpson kept Giffnock in touch at the top with a 5-1 win over Kelburne, while CALA Edinburgh and Grange beat Edinburgh University and Hillhead respectively.
