Hockey: Kelburne secure eighth consecutive title in style

GLYNHILL Kelburne claimed their eighth consecutive Subway National League title on Saturday, demolishing CALA 13-0, and yesterday they won 6-1 at Edinburgh University.

There can be no doubting Kelburne’s right to the crown, having failed to drop even a single point during the entire campaign.

Against Edinburgh, the Paisley side took a 3-1 half-time lead through Alan Forsyth (2) and Jonny Christie whereas after the interval Christie hit another three goals to end the contest.

In the match against CALA a spread of goals from, amongst others, Alan Forsyth (4), Jonny Christie (3) and Ross McIntyre (2) and Michael Christie secured an easy win.

Grange are now favourites for second spot and a place in Europe next season. A 4-0 win over Inverleith perhaps flattered them somewhat and they were only one up at the interval. .

In the second period, a lucky rebound off the leg of umpire John Heron fell to Andrew Brogdon who scored.Inverleith never really recovered and Matt Connor hit two late strikes from long balls out of the Grange defence.

Inverleith were held to a 3-3 draw by Grove Menzieshill, and are now four adrift of Grange. They looked to have the points in the bag but in the final minute Chris Wilson equalised for Grove.

Western Wildcats also drew 3-3 in their match against Greaves Clydesdale. This result all but ends their interest in finishing in second place.

AMN Hillhead beat bottom side VWS Dundee Wanderers 5-4, a result that sends the Taysiders into division two next season while Grove Menzieshill beat Edinburgh University 4-0.

In the women’s league, Grove are still on top following their narrow 4-3 victory against Edinburgh University, Ailsa Wyllie scoring a late winner for the Taysiders.

Milne Craig Western remain a point behind after a 2-1 win over second bottom Grange, Nicola Pitticas and Susan McGilveray scoring.

Meanwhile, Giffnock drew 1-1 against Dundee Wanderers while CALA Edinburgh neared safety with a 2-1 win over Kelburne.
