Hockey: Inverleith’s twin wins to start title bid

Inverleith, joint favourites for the indoor first division title with Grove Menzieshill, started their campaign with back-to-back victories over PSL Clydesdale and Western Wildcats.

Against Clydesdale they reached the interval 6-1 ahead before a final score of 12-2, goals coming from Phil Hall (5), Derek Salmond (3), Adam McKenzie (2), Chris Duncan and Graham Moodie. While the Wildcats game was a lot closer, Inverleith took control in the second half before eventually winning 7-3.

Menzieshill trounced the same two teams, beating Wildcats 9-1 and winning by a massive 21-1 margin over Clydesdale, while Grange’s young squad had a mixed day defeating newcomers Harris 6-2 before losing 8-3 to Glynhill Kelburne, who are joint top with Menzieshill and Inverleith after also beating Dundee Wanderers 6-5.

CALA Edinburgh are third in the women’s league after winning 4-0 against Glynhill Kelburne and crushing Inverleith 10-0. There were also back-to-back wins for Grove Menzieshill, Dundee Wanderers and Milne Craig Western.

In Melbourne, England finished bottom in the FIH Champions Trophy after losing 3-2 to New Zealand. The sides finished 2-2 in normal time before Nick Wilson’s extra time strike sealed the win. Australia won the gold medal with a 2-1 win over the Netherlands.
