Hockey: Inverleith thwarted in bid to overhaul league leaders

INVERLEITH endured a frustrating day in the Subway indoor national league when they passed up an excellent chance to move to the top of the table.

They saw off Western Wildcats 7-4 before slipping to a 1-1 draw with Dundee Wanderers. The dropped points mean that the Edinburgh outfit remain a point behind Menzieshill at the top prior to the final round of matches next weekend.

In their opening game, Adam MacKenzie and Derek Salmond grabbed doubles for Inverleith, whose other scorers were Callum Milne, Stephen Dick and John Harris.

Pole position in the table was there for the taking, but Inverleith fell behind to Wanderers, for whom Benny Gibson scored from a penalty corner three minutes from the interval.

MacKenzie equalised from another set piece but Inverleith were unable to go on and win the game, their cause being hampered by having Dick, Harris and Chris Grassick sin-binned during the match.
