Hockey: Inverleith march into last eight

Inverleith shook off some indifferent league form to dumped city neighbours Grange out of the Arthur McKay Scottish Cup with a 4-2 victory at Peffermill and take their place in the quarter-finals.

Cammie Fraser gave Grange the lead, but Paul Ritchie levelled and Inverleith were by far the more enterprising side in the second half,racing into an unassailable 4-1 lead through Tom Cousins, Adam McKenzie from a penalty corner and Patrick Christie. Grange’s Stuart Laing notched a late consolation.

Watsonians also drifted out of the cup after losing 5-0 to holders Glynhill Kelburne. An own goal set the victors on their way, Lee Morton made it two before one-way traffic in the second half saw Morton strike again before the final two goals came from Scott Sutherland, the first from a penalty corner.

Gordonians almost provided a shock result against Western Wildcats in Aberdeen, but fell foul of the lethal finishing power of Scott McCartney. The striker found the net four times in a narrow 5-4 win for the visitors.

The Tayside derby was an intriguing contest, eventually won 3-2 by Grove Menzieshill against a fighting Dundee Wanderers side. Menzieshill opened with a penalty corner strike by Gavin Tomlinson only for a fierce shot by Fergus Sandison to level the scores, but by the interval Craig Falconer had given Menzieshill a 2-1 lead. Their victory looked sealed when Paul Martin gave his side a 3-1 lead, but Bobby Ralph set up a tense finale.

Meanwhile, Milne Craig Western are on the verge of claiming the second European place for next season after seeing off Dundee Wanderers on Tayside in the women’s Aberdeen Asset Management First Division. Holly Cram sealed a 2-1 win. A bad weekend for Wanderers continued as they exited the Arthur McKay Scottish Cup, losing 3-0 to Grove yesterday.
