Hockey: Hawk-eye Harris helps Inverleith into cup semis

SCOTTISH international John Harris netted a double as Inverleith moved into the last four of hockey's Scottish Cup with a 4-0 victory in Aberdeen yesterday.

Andrew Dane and Lewis Gibson also scored in the comfortable win over minnows Granite City Wanderers.

Dave Reid, Inverleith's coach, said: "We scored two early goals and then became sloppy. They defended in numbers. We then scored two early goals in the second half and the performance was okay. We were comfortable."

Inverleith were not quite so comfortable in Saturday's league fixture, when a double from international striker Jonny Christie helped leaders Kelburne beat them 4-2 at Meadowmill.

Chris Reid hit the bar from a penalty stroke early but Christie sent a deflected low shot past the keeper to open the scoring.

John Harris levelled but the Paisley outfit upped the pressure and broke through in the second-half from Michael Christie. Andrew Dane then equalised but the result was sealed with two goals in as many minutes from Christie and Kenny Bain.

Reid and the Kelburne pair of Bain and Josh Cairns were sent to the sin bin late in the game and Adam Mackenzie had his penalty stroke effort saved by Mark Fulton allowing Kelburne to maintain their nine-point lead at the top.

Western Wildcats remain second after a 5-1 mauling of Menzieshill in Dundee.

Leaders Edinburgh University were held to a 1-1 draw by Hillhead in Division 1B. Stuart Lang gave the students the lead but Alan Meikle equalised for the Glasgow side. Dundee Wanderers moved into second after a 3-2 victory at Aberdeen and Watsonians gave themselves a lifeline at the foot of the relegation group with a 4-2 victory over pointless Stepps.

In Division Two, leaders CALA Edinburgh won 6-2 at Harris thanks to a David Guy treble. Waverley Inveresk Trinity slipped up 5-3 at Greenock.
