Hockey: Guy confident of overcoming ‘yo-yo team’

David GUY feels CALA Edinburgh have the game to beat Watsonians in Sunday’s hockey promotion play-off clash.

CALA face their Capital rivals at Peffermill (1.45pm) to decide who plays in the top flight next season and Guy, 26, a former Scottish youth internationalist, said: “Watsonians are a yo-yo team.

“They have some fine players and they get promoted but can’t sustain a challenge. They are a bit like ourselves.

“I feel we can edge it but it could be tetchy and aggressive and we have some young players in our side.

“If we play to our potential then we can win this.”

A complication is that CALA coach Neil Allan won’t be there. He gets married to fiancée Sarah Johnston tomorrow (Saturday) and several of the side, plus a number of Watsonians senior players, will be there as Allan formerly played for Watsons.

Meanwhile, Watsonians coach Calum Wood has attempted to keep his squad’s feet on the ground ahead of Sunday’s clash.

The Fife-based player/coach has just seen his Division Two squad come from behind to record a a 7-1 victory over Uddingston in their final league game of the season, but Wood warned: “Sunday is just another hockey game. It is not about jobs or livelihoods. If we win, great.

“We have a long-term plan for the club.

“We are part of the Watsonian set-up and there are around 400 youngsters playing hockey at Watsons.

“There are over 2500 children in the school and we have teams at a number of levels.

“So, it is about developing hockey long-term at the school.”
