Hockey: Grange in front as Kelburne breathe down their necks

GRANGE still lead men's hockey Division One but champions Kelburne have closed to one point.

The Edinburgh club have 29 points following Saturday's 3-0 victory over eighth-placed Dundee Wanderers at Peffermill. Kelburne have 28 points plus two games in hand and a better goal difference.

Grange, however, are digging deep and a double from Martin Kelly and a single from new signing Matt Connor saw them home on Saturday, but it needed two superb stops by Spanish goaltender Jeppo Torens near half-time to deny the eager Tayside attack.

Kelburne cruised to a 5-1 victory over Glasgow club Hillhead yesterday to secure a weekend win double following a 4-2 win at Clydesdale on Saturday.

At the other end of the table, Edinburgh University earned their first win of the season when they beat bottom club Aberdeen 3-0 at Peffermill. The plucky students were edged 3-2 by Western at the same venue on Saturday.

Craig Falconer netted the game-winner for Grove Menzieshill yesterday as the Dundee combine denied Inverleith a place in the Scottish Cup semi-final against Western.

He scored 12 minutes from time to secure a 4-3 win in a game dominated by Grove Menzieshill against the under-strength Edinburgh club.
