Hockey: Grange hit Uni hard in derby

GRANGE kept in touch with Western by dominating the Capital hockey derby, beating Edinburgh University 6-1 at Peffermill.

This extended their First Division unbeaten run to four games and Grange, with ten points, remain three points adrift of the leaders.

Andrew Campbell scored the students' consolation but disappointed Duncan Birse, Edinburgh's captain, said: "We played some really good hockey in spells but we missed our chances.

"We had three or four really good chances which would have kept the scores close but Grange were the more experienced side and they took their chances."

Elsewhere, under-strength Inverleith lost 7-1 at Western after dogged defence allowed them to hold the league leaders scoreless for the first 20 minutes.

Meanwhile, CALA Edinburgh continue to march on at the top of Division Two following a 5-1 win over mid-table Carnegie at Meggetland.

Watsonians, who are second, kept in touch by beating struggling St Andrews University 6-3 while Waverley Inveresk Trinity slipped up 5-1 at home to Falikrk GHG.
