East played West in their final match needing to win by five goals to pip South for the title but, with seconds remaining, they were only four ahead through two goals each for Jenny Polson and Sarah Jamieson.

The lifeline came when East were awarded a penalty corner and Plain ended the drama when she found the net from the setpiece and East took the gold with a goal difference of 16 to South's 15. In earlier matches, East beat Midland (7-0), North (3-0) and South-West (2-0), with Plain, Jamieson and Polson getting most of the goals, but the sole blot on their copybook came when they lost 4-3 to South, thus leading to the dramatic finale.
