Hockey: Duke delivers blow to Uni

Andrew DUKE helped increase the pressure on his former Edinburgh University hockey team-mates when he scored for Glasgow side Hillhead to edge out the battling students 3-2 at Peffermill.

This keeps them in second-bottom spot, four points ahead of rock-bottom Aberdeen who now have a game in hand.

Hillhead's other marksmen were Chris Caldwell and Scottish international Wei Adams, a former Grange player.

Keith Joss, Hillhead's coach, said: "It was one of our worst performances for the past month, and we did not play well, but I'm happy with three points." The Glasgow club move into sixth place while Inverleith slip down to seventh on goal difference.

Hillhead led 2-0 after 20 minutes but Stewart Laing pulled one back for the home side.

The Glasgow combine then forged 3-1 ahead before half-time but a strike from Richard McCorkell in the second period put the visitors under pressure but proved only to be a consolation.

Meanwhile, Scotland international defender Adam Mackenzie fired two late goals from penalty corners as Inverleith battled back from 2-0 down to earn a share of the spoils against Grove Menzieshill, also at Peffermill.
